Primæpp is the iPad app for learning to write with the school typeface Primæ. Children practise letters, words, and sentences directly on screen — in both the unjoined and cursive variants of Primæ. The app was designed for use in the classroom and at home, and is available free of charge.
Primæpp guides children step by step through all the letters of the Primæ system — from the first basic forms to joined words. Each exercise follows the didactic structure of the typeface.
The app shows the correct direction of strokes and pen movement for each letter. Children can trace the models and then write freely — the app gives gentle feedback.
Teachers can set the letter variants of Primæ — for example, whether k is written joined or interrupted. The app adapts to whichever style is taught in class.
Primæpp uses the Primæ variable font file and renders all weights — from Light to Bold — as well as both style directions.
Primæpp accompanies children through both stages of the Primæ system: first the unjoined print script, in which each letter is practised as an independent form. Then the cursive variant, in which letters are joined in a flowing movement. The formal relationship between the two styles is a core principle of Primæ — children recognise the letterforms and do not need to relearn them from scratch.
Primæpp complements classroom teaching with Primæ, but does not replace it. The app provides guidance and instructions for teachers who wish to use the typeface in the classroom. Detailed information can be found in the accompanying documents:
